For more than three decades, Trine Dyrholm has built one of the most remarkable careers in European cinema. This summer, the Danish actress and singer will receive the Masters of Cinema Award at Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest.
The award will be presented on July 28 at La Misericòrdia, in recognition of a career that has left its mark on European cinema for over thirty years. Dyrholm joins a distinguished list of previous recipients that includes Ken Loach, Isabelle Huppert, Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Frears, Irene Jacob, J.A. Bayona and Alberto Iglesias.
Born in Odense in 1972, Trine Dyrholm belongs to the generation of performers who have helped shape contemporary Nordic cinema. Many audiences first discovered her in The Celebration, Thomas Vinterberg’s groundbreaking film that launched the Dogme 95 movement. Years later, she reunited with the director for The Commune, a performance that earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Her filmography is, quite simply, extraordinary. She has worked with some of Europe’s most acclaimed filmmakers and starred in films as significant as In a Better World, directed by Susanne Bier and winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, and Queen of Hearts, one of the most celebrated performances of the last decade, awarded at Sundance and praised by critics around the world.
More recently, she once again captivated audiences and critics alike with her role in The Girl with the Needle by Magnus von Horn, which premiered at Cannes and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. She has also delivered some of television’s most notable performances in recent years, including the miniseries Revancha and the acclaimed dark comedy series The Danish Woman, which has become one of Filmin’s biggest recent successes.
What sets Dyrholm apart is not only the breadth of her career, but also her rare ability to move effortlessly between vastly different roles without ever losing credibility. She can be vulnerable, unsettling, funny or devastating. Taking your eyes off her is never easy.
Following the award ceremony, Dyrholm will take part in a public masterclass open to Balearic audiences and festival-accredited guests, offering a unique opportunity to engage with one of the leading figures in contemporary European audiovisual culture.
Trine Dyrholm is the first recipient announced for the Masters of Cinema 2026 honours. On June 29, we will reveal the second award recipient along with the rest of the festival programme.
