Es Baluard Museu hosts the best international cinema

Once again, Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest returns to one of its favorite venues: Es Baluard Museu, the contemporary art museum of Palma de Mallorca and one of the island’s most emblematic cultural spaces.

For ten days, Es Baluard Museu becomes the heart of the festival: a space to watch films, take part in industry and networking activities, attend conferences, dance, and enjoy.

The program brings together more than 30 screenings of the best contemporary cinema. Among them, we would like to highlight a few:

– “Extra Geography”

Molly Manners, BAFTA winner for Best Series for “In My Skin,” will attend the festival to present this coming-of-age tale about two best friends who, to cope with boredom at a boarding school, decide to fall in love.

– “Lionel”
Carlos Saiz will present his debut after making an impact at Seminci, Transilvania, and Beijing. A road trip from Murcia to Marseille and a story about family wounds, in which all the actors play themselves, blending reality and fiction.

-”Truly Naked”

Following its premiere at the latest Berlin Film Festival, Muriel d’Ansembourg will captivate us with this epic about sex and intimacy. A provocative, excessive, and daring film that seeks to explore male sexual intimacy.

– “Sucia”

After winning the Catalan Drama Award in 2021, Bàrbara Mestanza wrote Sucia and, following its success, decided to adapt it for the screen. In it, Bárbara, both director and actress, recounts her experience of sexual abuse and, while the trial unfolds, creates a stage piece based on the episode.

– “La Carn”
After its successful run in Málaga and SXSW, one of the boldest Balearic films arrives at Atlàntida. A young artist explores his sexuality through the screen until he blurs the line between the real and the virtual. In between, a masked man and a crime.

But Es Baluard is not just about cinema. The museum will also host conferences and encounters with some of the most prominent voices in the international audiovisual landscape, such as composer Alexandre Desplat, known for his scores for filmmakers like Wes Anderson and franchises such as Harry Potter and Twilight; John Wilson, creator of the acclaimed series How To with John Wilson; and actor Gael García Bernal, unforgettable in titles such as Amores perros, No, and Ema. They are joined by names such as Trine Dyrholm, Mariana Enríquez, and Isabel Peña, among many others.

In addition, Es Baluard will serve as the central hub for the festival’s industry section and the Atlàntida Mallorca Talents Lab, which celebrates its ninth edition this year. The lab has supported projects such as The Human Hibernation, La furia, Balearic, and Lionel, and in this edition will accompany 11 new projects in development, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to emerging talent and contemporary creation.

Spaces:

  • Es Baluard Aljub: the festival’s main screening venue, which will also host meetings with the Master of Cinema.
  • Es Baluard Terrace: the museum’s upper courtyard will serve as a meeting point for talks, trivia, and open activities, as well as hosting a music program with several DJ sets.
  • Es Baluard Auditorium: a space dedicated to industry, with conferences, networking activities, and sessions linked to the Atlàntida Mallorca Talents Lab, some of them open to the public.
