Sunday 26: now it’s really started, Atlàntida. After our two warm-up days, today we open one of the festival’s most important venues: La Misericòrdia.
The festival opening will feature one of the Balearic films with the greatest international reach and projection in recent years, alongside one of the most special emerging singers in our country. And, as always, plenty of cinema at Es Baluard, Sala Rívoli and CineCiutat.
LA MISERICÒRDIA
20:30 OPENING
The festival kick-off will be in the hands of Laaza. With sounds ranging from alternative pop to intimate electronica, her music moves between the reflective and the emotional, with writing deeply tied to the autobiographical. A perfect introduction to one of the films of the year: Forastera, by Lucía Aleñar, with the presence of the director and her actors, Zoe Stein and Lluís Homar. Shot in Mallorca, it is the perfect mix between “A Ghost Story” and the Mediterranean, with ghosts that move you more than they terrify you.
Mallorca, summer. After her grandmother dies, Catalina begins to imitate her: she wears her clothes, copies her gestures. What starts by accident ends up blurring reality, grief and her own identity.
ES BALUARD MUSEU
11:00 CASTRATION MOVIE, UNA ANTOLOGÍA: CAPÍTULO 3.2
The final part of one of the greatest revolutions in queer cinema.
Louise Weard’s anthology has created a fan phenomenon within the festival, eager to see what the director’s new story will be. Always extreme, daring and uncomfortable. Are you ready to discover what this new film will be like?
The Castration Movie universe expands and deepens its queer characters. While Izzy maintains an inflexible TERF stance and tries to prevent her partner from transitioning, Michaela, a trans woman, tries to become a better person and repair the emotional and social consequences of her past decisions.
17:00 MEKTOUB, MY LOVE: CANTO UNO
The first part of the cursed diptych by the director of “La vida de Adèle”.
Abdellatif Kechiche shot this film in 2017, but despite being screened at the Venice Film Festival, it still has not been released in Spain. An adolescent, Mediterranean odyssey in which its protagonists give themselves over to their most hedonistic and erotic desires. Ideal for those of you looking for the cinema’s air conditioning but not wanting to forget that it is summer.
Amin, a young screenwriter, returns to his coastal hometown in the south of France. Instead of writing, he will surrender to a hedonistic summer that will bring him back into contact with his family and friends, while also trying to find love.
19:00 ADRÉ ES IDIOTA
From A24, one of the funniest documentaries of the year.
Two awards at Sundance, a documentary that, from its premise, will make you think you’re about to cry, but… you’ll end up laughing instead.
André is an idiot. He knows it. And among his many idiocies, the biggest was skipping the colonoscopy that could have saved his life. But if there’s one thing he’s clear about, and this is the least idiotic of his decisions, it’s that he will face death with his favorite weapon: humor.
SALA RÍVOLI
17:00 ANNIE ERNAUX EN LA ESCUELA
For those interested in education, sexuality and, above all, literature.
Accompanied by an introduction by Cati Moyà and Marta Pérez, this documentary will address themes.
An approach to secondary school students in French schools who read and study the work of Annie Ernaux, Nobel Prize in Literature winner.
19:00 POR LAS MAÑANAS ESCRIBO
A drama, with comic touches, about a writer who can’t manage to be a writer.
Thanks to its absurdly charismatic lead, it won the Best Screenplay award at the latest Venice Film Festival. A film that speaks to the present (precarity, rent and temporary jobs) and will make you feel good while asking yourself: what would I give to be an artist?
Paul was a successful photographer who left everything behind for his true vocation: writing. The problem is that in his vocation he only accumulates failures and, like any human being, he needs money to live.
21:00 STRAIGHT CIRCLE
A miracle of independent cinema from the director of music videos for Radiohead and James Blake. Awarded three prizes at the Venice Film Festival, this witty and deeply personal film reimagines Samuel Beckett’s universe, waiting for Godot in the desert.
Two neighboring countries try to maintain a fragile truce after years of war. In the middle of an empty desert, two soldiers, one from each side, are stationed at their borders. But the problem begins when they forget which side they are on.
CINECIUTAT
17:00 EL VIAJE DE LOS COMEDIANTES
Cinema, theater and politics, all united by the greatest Greek director in history.
We continue with our Theo Angelopoulos retrospective, screening in Spain his 4K restoration, with the release of his third film. One of Susan Sontag’s favorite films is also one of the director’s most personal works, portraying a dark period in Greece: from the Metaxas dictatorship to the Nazi occupation.
A theatre company tours Greece during the occupation by Nazi troops. Their performances are continually interrupted by the conflict, while in the actors’ minds the line between fiction and reality begins to blur.
